The Western Addition is the neighborhood south of Geary, east of Divisadero and Steiner, north of Golden Gate, Fulton, McAllister and to the west of Gough and Webster. This area is also referred to as the Fillmore District and has undergone significant gentrification into a solid middle class neighborhood. This neighborhood has a lot of singles and empty nesters. Fillmore is definitely the commercial corridor with a lot of upscale shops and local restaurants. It has a thriving night life and restaurant scene. There is also currently an art and cultural movement taking place being led by such people as the Green Sisters that is having an impact on the whole neighborhood. The neighborhood, historically has had higher crime statistics than some other parts of the City.
The Western Addition was first developed around the turn of the 20th century as a middle-class suburb. Its Victorians survived the 1906 Earthquake and the fires that followed as they were located west of Van Ness. Prior to World War II the Western Addition was a combination of Japanese and African American communities. After Pearl Harbor many Americans of Japanese ancestry were moved to internment camps changing the demographics of the neighborhood forever.
