SF School System

The San Francisco School System is a somewhat difficult system to navigate.  There is a lottery system in place for the placement of children.  It has been revised in 2011 to be more neighborhood based vs. economic status based , but you should go to the San Francisco Public Schools website below to get more information.

A few things to note:
  • The placement for students is dependent on classroom capacity in larger districts with multiple schools
  • If you rent a home in one school district and then decide to move to another district, your child may not necessarily be able to remain in their current school
  • When selecting a school although the test scores are important you will also want to consider the staff, the environment, community, and after school activities offered
  • Children typically do not have to leave the district in which they live
  • Private schools will often require that your student pass their own assessment tests, but be sure to bring your child's school records
  • Private schools typically in 2011 run between $25,000 to $45,000 per year

We have included a list of schools and their School Accountability Report Card (SARC) for public ratings at the following SF School webpage.  Here is also a map of the public schools in San Francisco.

Below are some sites you may find useful, in addition to the SARC ratings, for determining which schools you may wish to enroll your children.  Note that the schools in California are ranked by something called the Academic Performance Index (API).  We have included some of these rankings and information below for San Francisco.
