The South of Market area of San Francisco is also referred to as SOMA, The SOMA neighborhood is between Market to the north and roughly 101/Division/King/South Park Federal/80 to the south and between 101/Market to the west and 5th Street to the east. In SOMA you will find cash loan establishments, pawnbrokers, and jewelery shops advertising honest values. It is an area that is undergoing gentrification and urban development and you will find many newer condominium buildings. There have also been many art galleries locating to this area and development projects in the works. West of Fifth Street is Mint Plaza containing many restaurants, Blue Bottle Coffee and the club Mezzanine. At Sixth Street there are palm trees and porn theaters. At Seventh and Mission is the new Federal Building and a Social Security Office. At 1235 Mission St you will find a building of Moorish design which is now the office for the Department of Human Services where lines of the poor apply for emergency food.

54 Mint is a traditional Italian restaurant with one of the best Italian wine and liquor lists in the City. In addition there are many specialty food items that are imported from Italy. AQ changes according to the seasons everything from the menu, to the table cloths, counters and staff clothes. Some items of interest on their menu that food critic Michael Bauer raved about were the Chef Liberman's veal breast, cauliflower, cured sturgeon, lamb's tongue, stuffed tortelloni and cobia fish served on a green spinach puree. Note though their pork and beef cheeks can be dry. Their dark chocolate chibouste dessert is amazing. They are located at 1085 Mission St near 7th Street (415) 341-9000. Una Pizza Napoletana is a fantastic artisan pizza place specializing in only 5 pizzas which they serve from 5pm until they run out of dough and are only open Wed through Sunday.
