Sausalito
Sausalito is just a quick ferry ride away, a short drive over the Golden Gate Bridge, or a bicycle outing. It is a small town, less than two square miles with 7000 affluent people whose median house values are just under $1 million. It is a tourist town and offers some of the best views of San Francisco's city skyline. Bridgeway Boulevard is the main drag full of restaurants, coffee shops, boutique shops, and souvenir retail stores.
When passengers get off the ferry they are greeted by a water fountain that states, "Have a drink on Sally." There is also a nearby one for dogs that states "Have a drink on Leland." An inscription states that the fountain is there to honor Sally Stanford, who served on the City Council and was mayor of the town. Leland was Sally's dog. This however is all an inside joke to local Sausalitans as Sally Stanford was actually a famous San Francisco madam who moved north and became "Her Honor." At that time Sausalito consisted of gambling halls, bootleggers and a lively waterfront.
Sausalito used to consist of dairy ranch families. In the 30's Baby Face Nelson supposedly hid out in the town. In the 60's it had a houseboat scene that was famous for sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. Sausalito has since changed into a a much more respectable small town than its colorful past. It is now a place where neighbors know each other and take pride in their town. Caledonia is the locals main drag with its restaurants, movie theater, babershop, grocery stores, bar and Portuguese hall.
Richardson's Bay is a yacht lined harbor with boat repair yards. There are 5 houseboat marinas with more than 400 houseboats called "floating homes."
The Marinscope which is the local town newspaper runs a weekly police log where can be found such complaints as a neighbors dog barking too loud, a drunken driving, a burglary, or the theft of a bike.
Tirdent is a restaurant that has a wonderful dark wood paneled roof, unparalleled views of San Francisco, and a 70s Janis Joplin feel. Be sure to order the fried calamari and the fish and chips which are exceptional. It is located at 558 Bridgeway at Princess (415) 331-3232.
