Haight Street was named after pioneer and exchange banker Henry Haight. Ashbury Street was named after Munroe Ashbury a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors between 1864 and 1870. They both played a part in the inception of Golden Gate Park. This area used to be a collection of farms in the early 19th century but with the completion of the Haight Street cable car in 1883, which connected Market St. to Golden Gate Park, turned this into an upper middle class neighborhood. This neighborhood pretty much survived the 1906 Earthquake fire leaving it with many beautiful Victorian homes. This neighborhood however was struck heavily during the Great Depression and there was a flight of the middle class to the newer suburbs and smaller neighborhoods. During this time many of the Victorians initially built as homes for large families were chopped up and divided into apartment buildings. Haight Asbury gained notoriety during the 1960s for the hippie movement and its American counterculture.
