The Eureka Valley, Dolores Heights Neighborhood stretches from Twin Peaks to Noe and Eureka Valleys. It is south of Market St and 20th St., north of 22nd St, east of Market and west of Church and Valencia. It also contains the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco which is known for its large homosexual community. This neighborhood has many restored Victorians and during the summer months tends to get fog which rolls over Twin Peaks in the west during the evenings and then retreats again the mornings. The upper part of Dolores Heights contains many homes with fantastic downtown city views which are especially spectacular at night. The main commercial corridor of Eureka Valley is the intersection of 18th St and Castro streets. Several restaurants, bars and small businesses can be found here. Parking can be a bit of a challenge in this neighborhood.
Historically a large portion of Eureka Valley used to be a ranch owned by John M. Horner in 1854. It later became subdivided, but with the opening of the Market & Castro Street Cable Car it brought many middle class tradesman and small businesses to the neighborhood. Eureka Valley escaped most of the destruction of the 1906 Earthquake.
The Castro Neighborhood of San Francisco is known for its large homosexual community. In it you will find rainbow flags flying, leather bars, dance clubs, bars, and men with lap dogs. It is the neighborhood primarily centered at Market St., Castro St., and 18th Streets. Review: Yelp.
