_Central Waterfront / Dogpatch Neighborhood (94107) (9j)
The Central Waterfront / Dogpatch Neighborhood of San Francisco is the neighborhood south of Mariposa, east of 280, north of Cesar Chavez, and west of the Bay. It used to be a working middle class neighborhood, but is now becoming a trendy up and coming neighborhood of wine bars and live work lofts.
After WWII, the Central Waterfront went through a general decline until the 1970s. At that point the Esprit Company reintroduced light industry to the area resulting in an economic turnaround for the area. Until the 1990s most of the Central Waterfront was industrial and undeveloped with most of the residential area centering around the Dogpatch. The Central Waterfront contains historic shipyards at Pier 70.
The Dogpatch is an enclave consisting of residential, live work spaces, and some light industrial areas. It is an officially designated historic district in the City. The Dogpatch has some of the oldest buildings in the City with some dating back to the 1860s as many survived the 1906 earthquake and fire relatively unscathed. In the 1990s there was a gentrification of the Dogpatch and Central Waterfront resulting in the new construction of many loft-style condominiums. There are several Victorians designed by Jon Cotter Pelton, Jr. which still remain on Tennessee and Minnesota Streets.
